Jefferson County grand jury hands down indictments (2024)

STEUBENVILLE — A man who allegedly shot at police during a three-state high speed chase and another who fired “multiple rounds” at a deputy sheriff were indicted Wednesday by a Jefferson County Grand Jury.

A total of 16 indictments were returned, Prosecutor Jane Hanlin reported.

Ordered to stand trial on two felony counts of felonious assault, each with a firearm specification, plus inducing panic and using weapons while intoxicated, both misdemeanors, was Adam Coy Roberts, 616 State route 151, Mingo Junction.

The indictment alleges Roberts, 43, was armed with three guns when he caused or attempted to cause harm to a Jefferson County sheriff’s deputy and forced authorities to evacuate a public place with “reckless disregard” of the panic he’d caused on Sept. 7 in the Gould’s Run area. It also suggests Roberts was under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol at the time.

Authorities allege Roberts fired “multiple rounds from multiple weapons” at the deputy and other officers responding to the shots fired call, “and when (officers) finally got into his house they found 110 spent shell casings.”

Also indicted was Tyler Joseph Karhut, 198 National Road, Toronto, aggravated burglary, aggravated assault felonious assault, and failure to comply with order of signal of a police officer, all felonies, along with misdemeanor counts of aggravated menacing and criminal damaging or endangering.

Authorities allege Karhut, 27, forced his way into a former girlfriend’s house on Sept. 19 and, armed with a knife, “in a sudden fit of rage” threatened to harm her male companion before fleeing in the man’s car.

They said an Ohio State Highway Patrol officer spotted the car at a rest stop and discovered Karhut sleeping with a gun in his lap. The officer called for backup but before it arrived they allege Karhut took off, leading police on a high-speed chase into West Virginia and Pennsylvania, where the pursuit was called off. Karhut, who was taken into custody by authorities in Pennsylvania, allegedly fired shots from his car window during the chase.

The six-count indictment charges Karhut broke into the ex-girlfriend’s residence and “attempted or threatened to inflict physical harm” on her and the man who was with her” with the knife, taking the man’s car, knowingly causing or attempt to cause physical harm to the OSHP trooper and trying to elude police despite being ordered to stop, causing a “substantial risk of serious physical harm” to others.
